Setting up of 01 (One) Model Schools at each Block Head Quarter is an important agenda of Odisha Govt. Basically Model Schools will have infrastructure and facilities of the same standard as in Kendriya Vidyalayas with stipulation on Pupil-Teacher ratio, ICT usages, holistic educational environment, appropriate curriculum and emphasis on output and outcome.
Some of the key features of model school are as follows:
- School should be holistic and integral touching upon physical, aesthetic development in addition to academic.
- The school will have adequate ICT infrastructure, internet connectivity and full time computer teacher.
- There will be sufficient scope for sports and co-curricular activities.
- Teacher pupil ratio should not exceed 1:25 and classroom will be precious with class room-student ratio of 1:40.
- There will be provision of Art and Music Teacher besides subject teachers.
- Special emphasis will be given on teaching of Science, Math and English.
- Medium of instruction will be English and the schools will be affiliated to CBSE.
- Model Schools will have appropriate pace setting activities, so that schools in the neighborhood can benefit.
- The classes will be from VI to XII having two (02) sections in each class with intake capacity of 40 in each section.
- There will be 50% reservation for Girls.
- The reservation of seats for students will be as per the percentage of SC & ST population in the respective Blocks.
- 162 Model Schools have already been sanctioned in 162 Educationally Backward Blocks (EBBs) in 02 phases.
- TATA has agreed to construct Model Schools 30 blocks, OMC in 25 and JSPL in 10 blocks. The rest 87 blocks will be covered in phased manner.
- Instruction has been issued to identify land of 5-20 acres in Block Head Quarters for these schools. Additional infrastructure will be provided to make it really a centre of excellence.
- The construction of building has been entrusted to RD Department.
- The construction of at least 100 Model Schools will be completed by March, 2016 and preparatory activities have been initiated to make 100 schools functional from the next academic session.
